Dear Parents and Carers

This week we had the Music Bus visit us in the school playground. Pupils were invited to experience playing a musical instrument: keyboard, guitar or percussion instrument, according to their preference. We hope children enjoyed these sessions and that some of them will sign up for small group music lessons with ‘Music Works’ in school.

Reception class children enjoyed a visit from the fire brigade as yet another big vehicle popped into the school playground. Children were treated to a show-round of the vehicle and a healthy blast of the siren as the fire engine left the premises!

Year 1 pupils delivered a super assembly on Thursday morning, basing this around what they have learned in their castles topic work this term. Many children learned their lines off by heart and spoke with clarity and confidence as they told the audience about their work. Well done Year 1’s and thank you to Miss Harling and her assistants.

On Thursday afternoon, I met with the joint PTA Chairs, Mrs Cook and Mrs Quickfall, both of whom are enthusiastic ambassadors for the school. I should like to express my extreme gratitude to them and to all volunteer members of the PTA for the work they have already done and that which they plan to do over the coming months.  It is evident that there is a great deal of support for the projects that have been identified as worthy of PTA funding and we hope to improve our outdoor learning environment later this year. The PTA have also agreed to help with various smaller projects including  the purchase of outdoor speakers so that children can hear music and enjoy taking part in child-led dancing sessions during their playtimes.

Well done to children who have engaged in sporting events this week. More about this in Mrs Wright’s sports section below.

Finally, for your information, having ‘lost’ another School Business Manager late last term, we have interviewed and re-appointed a new one, this week. Mrs Yvette Oqvist, a former parent at the school, will join us as School Business Manager next week and you may see her in and around school from Tuesday onwards. I should like to welcome Mrs Oqvist to the St Mary’s family as we wish her every success and happiness in her new role. I would also like to take this opportunity to make special mention of Mrs Zoe Bishop, whose sterling efforts, in the face of significant adversity, have helped to maintain the school office during a period of under-staffing. Thanks also, to Mrs Buckley, Mrs Bedford, Mrs Balchin and Mrs Johnson and others who have stepped in to cover the office in the absence of Mrs Bishop and a Business Manager. Thanks to all for your dedication and commitment to St Mary’s School!

Have a great weekend! With best wishes...

POPPY APPEAL

This year’s British Legion Poppy Appeal includes not only paper poppies, but smart pins, a choice of wristbands, key rings and pencils. Enquire in the Office to see the full range and to donate. We look forward to seeing the children wearing their poppies for our Remembrance Service next Friday 11th November.

This year the children would like to support St Mary’s Church in Operation Christmas Child. This involves children filling a shoe box with small gifts for either a boy or a girl age ranges 2-4, 5-9  or

10-14. Please specify on the box age range and whether they are for a boy or a girl. The boxes can be wrapped in Christmas paper but the lid must be wrapped separately. Gifts placed inside should not be wrapped. A list of gift ideas will be attached to the Bulletin. Completed boxes need to be returned to the School Office by Friday 11th November. Shoe boxes are available at the Rectory if necessary. If you have any queries, please speak to Mrs Buckley.

Wow!  What a response!  Thank you to those of you who have returned your £1 and profit so far.  We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and variety of fundraising ideas.  Please keep them coming, so far we have raised £350 and it would be fantastic if we could double that amount.  You have all been super entrepreneurs, from baking and craft to gardening and car washing; we are loving hearing about your adventures! If you have not managed to complete the challenge, please remember to return your £1 to school by Friday 4th November.

On Wednesday 2nd November we attended a Football Tournament at Tillingbourne School. We played 7 ten minute matches over the course of the afternoon. All our matches were challenging but good goals were scored by Blaise and Gabriel. All boys played well; Blaise, Gabriel and Jack were up front, Marley and Joseph were excellent in mid-field and Adam, Matis and Elliot provided our defence. Joshua was a star player as our goalkeeper, making some impressive saves. A special mention goes to Joseph who had not played a tournament before and was really effective in mid-field. Well done boys!

On Wednesday 2nd November Haslemere Fire Service came to visit Reception class in order to support their topic ‘People Who Help Us’. The children were really excited and got to look all around the fire engine at the equipment they use in different emergencies. They got to climb in the fire engine and spray the small hose across the field which was certainly a highlight! Before leaving, the firefighters asked how many different siren noises the fire engine had, do you know? How could you find out?

Reception Class would like to thank Haslemere Fire Service for visiting and will continue with their learning about the Fire Service and the importance of staying safe at all times.
