Transition

Play and Learn
Sessions for Reception intake

Once you have accepted your place at St.Mary’s Primary School all correspondence will be sent to you regarding transition.

A successful transition means children settle quickly into school, learning and developing from day one.  When four year olds set off for their first day at ‘big school’, they should be full of positive emotions – excitement, confidence and happiness. This happens if they know exactly where they are going, who will be there, what they will be able to do when they get there and how long they will be staying there.

During the summer term at St. Mary’s we will arrange a home visit and invite both the children and adults into school for a few play and learn session lasting an hour each. The children will be in their new classroom, meet the teacher and assistant and explore some of the wonderful learning opportunities which are on offer.  This is a great opportunity to get accustomed to the school and see how things work.

During this term we visit the children in their nursery settings where we observe their play and liaise with staff which helps us prepare for the new intake.

This all supports a great transition. The children are known to us which helps them to settle and be confident and ready to begin their school journey.
