NEWS - 28 MARCH 2019

“How great is God’s love for all who worship him?  Greater than the distance between heaven and earth”!

Dear parents/carers

In the penultimate week of term, we watched the drama club deliver a confident and engaging performance for the school. Some of our Year 6 children played netball in County Qualifiers at Rodborough School and today Year 2 informed and entertained us with their assembly all about our wonderful world.  The children spoke out beautifully and wowed us with their amazing facts.  Great work from the pupils and thank you to their hard-working teachers.

Year 6 set off to London on Tuesday to visit the natural history museum to enhance their science topic, they spent the morning looking at exhibits linked to evolution including dinosaurs, fossils and early man.  The children were impeccably behaved and great ambassadors for our school.

Next week is the last week of term and there is still lots going on.  The photographer will be in school on Monday morning for class photos, please ensure your child is wearing the correct uniform.  The Easter Service will take place in the church on Tuesday morning and will be led by Year Three.  Everyone is very welcome to attend.

Those children participating in the Easter Bonnet competition need to bring their masterpieces in on Wednesday. Photographs will be sent to the Surrey Advertiser and prizes will be awarded to the most creative from each class on Friday.

On Thursday Year 1B will deliver their class assembly and Friday at 9am will be the final assembly of the term, completed certificates will be presented in this assembly.  School closes at 1.30pm for the Easter break.  Please take home PE kits and have a rummage in the lost property bin, you will be amazed what you can find in there!  Summer term begins for the teachers on 23rd April for an INSET day in which we will be developing and enhancing our curriculum. Term begins for children on Wednesday 24th April.

Don’t forget clocks go forward this weekend!  Happy Mothering Sunday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sheila Buckley

Start of Whitsun Term – Summer Uniform

Make your own Easter bonnet from re-cycled material only!

We will be holding a competition in school, then the hats will be photographed for the Surrey Advertiser.   The Surrey Advertiser will be publishing the photo special on Friday 26th April 2019.

Deadline for submissions in school is 3rd April so we have time to photograph them.

After the Easter holidays children can return to school in summer uniform.  For girls this is either a pale blue gingham dress or grey skirts/shorts and white polo shirt.  For boys grey shorts/trousers and white polo shirt.  The school sweatshirt should be bought in for cooler days.

We will be monitoring the uniform closely as recently there have been some children wearing navy cardigans and jumpers as well as inappropriate footwear, hair accessories and jewellery.

This will not be tolerated going forward.  We would be grateful for your support in this matter.

St Mary’s, in line with other confederation schools is dedicated to providing a well-rounded and extensive education for our pupils which includes a wide range of extra-curricular activities and extended services. These enable our school to provide:

  • high-quality learning opportunities at the end of the school day;
  • ways of intervening early when children are at risk of poor outcomes, e.g. by providing access to homework clubs;
  • ways of increasing pupil engagement;
  • ways of improving outcomes and narrowing gaps in outcomes between different groups of pupils.

St Mary’s offer a number of after school clubs led by teachers and non-teaching staff (‘teacher-led clubs’).  These also provide childcare for parents and guardians.  Due to ongoing funding cuts from the Government and restricted budgets there will now be a charge for all teacher-led clubs from September 2019.  This charge will help cover the cost of staff engaged to provide the activity or club.  The total charge will not exceed the cost of providing the club and no parent will be asked to subsidise others.  The cost per term for up to 2 internal clubs will be £15. This will be a one off payment and payment will need to be made to secure a place at the club and non-payment may prevent a child joining a club.

This cost will be reviewed on an annual basis each Summer term and parents/guardians will be advised of any cost increases.

Afterschool Club Information will be sent home with children in book bags tomorrow for Summer Term Clubs.

PDA Multi Sports Club

We have a new Multi sports club starting on Thursdays during the Summer Term. This is run by PDA Coaching who have worked in the past at St Marys with KS2 and run coaching sessions for Chiddingfold FC. It is for Years 2-5; the children will learn new techniques and skills and play different matches and fun games. To book your child's place please go to

Please make your school dinner meal choices by next Wednesday 3rd April for the first week back after Easter.  Also please note that the meal for Wednesday 3rd will be as follows in place of the usual roast dinner:-

Main – Ham and Cheese Pizza

Vegetarian – Margarita Pizza

Registers are taken at the beginning of every afterschool club.  If your child is unable to attend for any reason please inform the school office as soon as possible.  If your child decides on the day not to attend please inform the office or member of staff running the club.  Your cooperation in this matter is much appreciated.

Please kindly note that if you need to speak to your class teacher please fill in a “quick note to teacher” form from the office or email the teacher directly to request a meeting.  Classes start promptly at 8.35am and teachers need to be in class at this time.

During the summer term School Council is focusing on 'How to Make the World Better' and as part of this initiative we have signed up with Ecobricks.  This is a fast-growing worldwide movement dedicated to reducing the amount of plastic which ends up in our environment, littering our world and threatening marine life.  We are lucky enough to be taking part in an Ecobricks Workshop on Tuesday 7th May, when a representative from Ecobricks is coming into school to introduce the children to the concept of Ecobricks and show them how to create them.   The idea is to fill a plastic bottle with unrecyclable soft plastic which can then be used as a building block - we are aiming to use the filled bottles to build a structure in our outside area which will benefit all the children.

Each child will need to bring in a small, dry and clean plastic bottle (under 500ml) -  Ribena 380ml is a good size and shape.  They will also need to collect and bring as much soft, clean, dry unrecyclable plastic as possible - a carrier bag full (roughly 200g) per child is perfect.  Each child will also need a 'pokey stick' to help push the plastic into the bottle:  a short bamboo cane, chop stick or wooden spoon is ideal.

Thank you for your support with this exciting new project!

On Friday 22nd March Mrs Wright took 25 Year 2s to a football tournament at Pennthorpe School in Rudgwick. The children were very excited to received hot dogs and cookies for lunch which gave them the energy to play some excellent football! We had four teams: Sharks, Bears, Dragons and Wolves, and each team played four matches against Slinfold Primary, Cuthbert-Mayne and Pennthorpe. This was a friendly event and St Marys displayed brilliant sportsmanship and determination. We won most of the matches we played! But above all, every child joined in, got stuck in and had fun! Well done Year 2! Thanks you to Mrs Thompson, Mr Roper, Mrs Lee-Smith and Mrs Denyer for coming along.

On Monday 25th March, the Year 6 netball team were invited to Rodbourgh School for the County Qualifier Tournament. Although we have not played many external matches, the Year 6 team really pulled together and showed how much they have grown in confidence and their netball ability. We were fortunate to have such lovely weather to play in as well! The first two games we played we lost, but the team did not let their heads drop – and we went on to win our next two matches. A fantastic performance by all!

Well done to our captain Violet, Rachael, Lily, Lottie P, Matis, Eleanor, Jemima and Will! Fantastic ambassadors of St Mary’s!
