NEWS - 12 JULY 2018

Next week’s value is Confidence

“I can do all things through Christ because he gives me strength”. Philippians 4.13

Dear parents/carers

Well done to KS2 pupils who participated in the District Sports at Charterhouse School this week. Children trained intensely in preparation for the event and they certainly did us proud on the day! Well done to children and a big thank you to Mrs Wright for organising all of our sporting activities this term! More about the District results in Mrs Wright’s report below.

Thank you to our Work Experience students, all former pupils of St Mary’s, who joined us in school over the past couple of weeks. Students helped out with end of term activities, including sporting events and the end of year production, gaining some valuable experience of life in a school setting, from the other side of the desk!

Year 6 Moving Up Day went well on Monday when Mrs Newton made a special visit to meet her new class and she is looking forward to working with them in September.

Our grateful thanks to the Three Peaks Committee, who gave a brilliant presentation in Monday’s assembly. These wonderful ladies really are an inspiration to us all and we were thrilled to hear more about their training, exploits and the challenges they faced, when climbing the three highest mountains in the UK.

Key Stage 2 SATS results were published on Tuesday! We are very pleased with the outcomes and all pupils, regardless of their individual results, should be extremely proud of their efforts. Well done, Year 6 children!

Governors said a fond farewell to Reverend Sarah when she attended her final Governing Body meeting on Tuesday evening. The Chair, Mrs Doherty, thanked Sarah for her commitment and contribution to St Mary’s School and the church over the past 15 years. We are very sad to see her go and add our heartfelt thanks to Reverend Sarah. We wish her, and her family, every success and happiness in all future endeavours. We will certainly miss them!

The end of year production had its first airing as a dress rehearsal on Wednesday morning. Nursery pupils visited St Mary’s to act as the first test audience and some last minute amendments have been introduced. Hopefully, all goes well and we are looking forward to this evening and tomorrow night’s performances. I should like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Cowley, and Andy from Musicworks, for giving so generously of their time to help us set up the sound system and carry out the sound checks. Thanks also to the PTA, to whom we are hugely indebted, for their support of this event and for all their hard work over the course of this year.

Look out for end of year reports this Friday - if children are anything like me, when I was their age, they will have opened, read and eaten them by the time they get home!

Have a great weekend.

Janis Radcliffe

Nominations to be in by Friday 13th July.

Kickstart – last sessions Friday 13th and Tuesday 17th July

On Thursday 5th July we took a team of Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 to Confederation Sports Day at Woolmer Hill. The children competed against 7 other teams in track and field events. It was a hot day and all the children performed brilliantly against some tough competition. Year 5 came second in their events! Well done to all and thank you to Mrs Denyer and Mrs Thompson for helping.

On Tuesday afternoon athletes from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 took part in our local small school District Sports event at Charterhouse. This is our most competitive event in the academic year and every point counts! The children have trained hard after school with the help of Waverley Harriers and practiced at Charterhouse regularly. There were hurdle races, sprints, long distance, relays, throwing and long jump events. We performed consistently well in all events; improvements were made this year in throwing and jumping and our long distance runners were outstanding. When the results came in, our little Year 3 team took the trophy for first place! Overall we came a very respectable third - our best performance as a school for many years!!! Well done Team!!!!

You should all have received a letter by now informing you that from September if you have not selected your meal choice and it is left blank you will need to provide a packed lunch for your child as we are no longer able to overwrite the system and enter for you.

Please make every effort weekly or half termly to select your choices.  KS2 will only be able to make a selection if the account is in credit.  If you are not in credit you will need to provide a packed lunch.  If you have any queries please do contact the office.

If you have a child in Y6 with a St Mary’s Savings account please ask them to come to the office before Friday 13th July to withdraw any savings and close their accounts.

Mrs Mollet’s family have a connection with a school in Zambia which they are fortunate to be visiting this summer.  They would like to collect clean, in reasonable condition football shirts and shorts to take out to the children there this summer.  If you have any you wish to donate please bring them into Dylan Y4.

We have a large tub of lost property and cake boxes/plates – please check before the end of term as unclaimed items will be donated to charity over the summer holidays.

From September the cost of breakfast club will be £3.50 per child.  This increase is due to increased numbers of pupils attending and will cover the cost of an additional member of staff to run the club.

If your child has medicines in school please ensure they are collected before the end of term as we are unable to keep them during the school holidays.

If your child needs medicine in school please ensure that they are in school during the first week of term in September.

Sergey was found in the park last week and handed into the school.  If anyone knows who he belongs to please contact the school office!

All children need to have their costumes in a named bag on Monday 9th July for dress rehearsals.  The costumes will then stay in school all week and will go home with children on Thursday.
