NEWS - 14 JUNE 2018

Next week’s value is Reflection

“As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart”. Proverbs 27:19

Dear parents/carers

It’s been unusually quiet in school this week! Year 6 children set off on Monday, to Chidham Residential Centre, run by the Christian Youth Enterprise Sailing Centre in Chichester and Year 5 children arrived safely, on Wednesday, to the more local High Ashurst Outdoor Education Centre, where they will spend a couple of days engaging in exciting outdoor activities. We expect all children (and adults) to arrive back on Friday afternoon and to sleep really well this weekend!

On Monday evening, Miss Griffiths and I met with the parents of those new pupils who will be joining our Reception class in September. Children themselves came into school on Wednesday, for ‘SMART Club’ and their first taste of school. Everyone seemed to be settled and happy and we know that you will make new children and their parents very welcome, when they join us formally, later in the year.

Pupil numbers are expected to be only a little below this year’s numbers, in September, but we do still have about 6 vacant places in Reception and a couple of places available in other year groups. If you hear of anyone looking for a school place, please do let them know and encourage them to visit us. You are our greatest allies and most effective, unpaid, marketing executives!  It is worth knowing that, for every pupil on our register, we receive more funding with which to buy curriculum resources and provide children with extras that will further enhance their learning.

On Wednesday afternoon, selected Year 3 and Year 4 children visited Charterhouse School, where they took part in the District Sports athletic events. Well done to all participants and thank you for representing St Mary’s School so brilliantly!

I had a meeting with Mrs Oqvist this morning, when we put the final touches to the GDPR (General Data Protection Guidelines) paperwork, which will be sent to you in September. It would help us enormously if we could have a swift turnaround of this important information so please do look out for it and respond quickly. Thank you in anticipation for your cooperation.

Next week is national ‘Feel good Week’, which we will be kicking off with a visit from Mr Bowring and his hedgehogs! More about this special event in next week’s bulletin.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Janis Radcliffe

Moving Up Day – children will meet their new teacher – letters to follow

Remember it is Sports Day on Tuesday 19th June. Your child will bring their PE kit home on Friday in preparation for coming to school dressed in it on the day. However, please remember that they need to wear a t-shirt in the colour of their house - Ruby Red, Emerald Green, Sapphire Blue and Amber Yellow (usual PE t-shirt). They must have trainers on and a water bottle and sun cream is a good idea if it is sunny and warm. Finger crossed!

There will be a whole school picnic – if you haven’t already handed in your lunch form you will now need to provide your child with a packed lunch.

There will be no basketball club on Thursday 14th June, no cooking club on Wednesday 20th June, and no homework club on Thursday 14th June due to staff attending residential trip.

Please find in book bags today a leaflet to pre-order the “Alice the Musical” DVD.  Please return these forms by Friday 6th July with the correct payment in an envelope.  Cheques payable to St Mary’s School Chiddingfold PTA.

The PTA have also requested donations of bottles for the raffle – please bring donations in on Friday 6th July and leave in the box at the bottom of the staff room stairs in the Mullard Building.

The ‘3 Peaks Ladies’ would like to thank everyone for their support of the cake sale last Friday. We raised £185 which is brilliant (and means a lot of cake was eaten!).  We have been training hard and are looking forward to climbing those mountains in just 2 weeks’ time!

We are delighted that so far over 50 children have taken part in the Mini 3 peaks challenge. We have even been told that one family completed 18 peaks! Amazing effort and remember there is still time to take part up until 28th June. All those completing the Mini Peaks Challenge will receive a wristband and certificate - have a look at the noticeboard opposite the Mullard building to see who has taken part so far!

Finally, there is still time to place a wager on our finish time for £1.  There is a board up in the Mullard building and there will be a prize for the guess closest to our finish time!

Rounders club versus parents match

Support your team:

To add to the excitement, the children will be competing for their houses!  Everyone will need a coloured t-shirt representative of their house colour – RED for Ruby House, BLUE for Sapphire House, YELLOW for Amber House and GREEN for Emerald House.  If you are not sure which house your child is in please check with their teacher.

Don’t forget:

As well as a coloured t-shirt, shorts and suitable outdoor PE footwear are essential. Please make sure your child has sun protection and a water bottle if the weather is good and perhaps a coat if it is not!

Spectators will be very welcome to sit in the designated areas, but remember to keep a safe distance away from the marked track!  The public playground will be out of bounds for school children during the day.  The Pavilion Coffee Bar will be open from 11.30am to 4.00pm for cakes, coffee and tea – please pop in for a warm welcome (and delicious food!)

For the whole school picnic the children will be taken to meet their parents/friends or will sit with school staff to eat.  Children who normally have a packed lunch should bring it into school in the morning as usual.  Children who normally have a school meal should have returned their order form.  They will then be provided with their pre-selected packed lunch.  Parents can, of course, bring extra snacks for their children.  After eating, all the children will return to the school playground for supervised lunch play followed by registration before the afternoon activities commence.  Please note that the picnic will be cancelled if it rains!

Following the presentation of the trophy to the winning house at the end of the afternoon children will return to their classrooms for normal collection.

Rounders Match

After the success of last year’s ‘children v parents Rounders match’, we are inviting Rounders and Cricket club parents to join us at 3pm. The parents won last year – so the children are training hard!
