NEWS - 3 MAY 2018
Next week’s value is Kindness
“The islanders showed us kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold”. Acts 28:2
Dear parents/carers
Clubs began in earnest this week; there were lots of outdoor activities as well as a lovely, mouth-watering smell emanating from the activity room indoors!
This week’s value of the week has been ‘kindness’ and children have been challenged to think about ways in which they can demonstrate this. Of course, they have risen to the occasion and we have seen some lovely examples of kindness and helpfulness around the school.
Today (Thursday), we welcomed two very special visitors. Mr Tony Billings (Chief Executive of The Good Shepherd Trust) and Mrs Caroline Doherty (Chair of Governors) visited us! They both enjoyed their tour of the school. Children were well-behaved and proved to be great ambassadors for the school, demonstrating respect, showing off their good manners and responding politely to enquiries, leaving visitors with a very positive impression of St Mary’s School.
Children may have told you that, on Tuesday, we had a hitch with the fire alarm system, when it was unintentionally triggered! As a precautionary measure children had to be evacuated from the dining hall, whilst school leaders checked the kitchens, boiler rooms and appliances. Fortunately, staff and children were very well prepared and the whole event unfolded like clock-work, with some children even leaving their half-eaten lunches to line up in silence on the playground, under the instruction of their teachers. Well done and thank you to everyone - no need to panic!
Next Monday (7th May) is Bank Holiday Monday so let’s hope for warmer weather! We look forward to seeing you all again on Tuesday 8 May 2018, same time, same place!
Have a lovely weekend!

SCHOOL FUND
A big thank you to all of you who have donated to the school fund so far this academic year. We really appreciate your donations and kindly remind you that we recommend £25.00 per child per term. These funds assist with classroom budgets and go towards the little extras that teachers can provide with topics etc. You can make your donation for the Summer Term online through Scopay.
RAFFLE TICKETS
You will find raffle tickets in your child’s book bag this week for the Chiddingfold Village Fete. We kindly ask on behalf of the Village Fete Committee that you sell these tickets and return the stubs and the money in an envelope marked “Village Fete” by Friday 2nd June.
CHARITY DONATIONS
Mufti Day – Royal Wedding – Friday 18th May 2018
RNLI Visit Day – Thursday 24 May 2018
This week’s value of the week is ‘kindness’. Children at St Mary’s have shown they understand the value of kindness and have been giving thought to the sort of people they would like to help.
Some children in Year 1 are particularly keen to raise money to support homeless people and we would like to help them to achieve their goal by charging a £1 for the privilege of coming to school in mufti (red, white and blue), on Friday 18th May, when we will be celebrating the royal wedding. All money collected will go to one of the homeless charity Centrepoint.
We are also very fortunate to be expecting a visit from the RNLI this month. This will take place on 24th May, and, although there is no charge for the day, we would like to make a donation to show our gratitude and to help this important voluntary organisation. RNLI representatives will provide a free assembly and age-appropriate workshops and there will be a real Lifeboat exhibit in the school hall. Children will have the opportunity to dress up in sea-faring gear and see video footage of a lifeboat rescue as well as asking any questions they may have. We hope you will agree this is another worthy cause and we invite you to send £1, or whatever you can afford, to support the RNLI on this day.

After half term District Sports club and Fun Athletics will swap days. Fun Athletics will be on a Tuesday and District Sports Club will be on a Wednesday. Sorry for any inconvenience caused, please email Mrs Wright if you have any questions lwright@stmarys-godalming.surrey.sch.uk

Support your team:
To add to the excitement, the children will be competing for their houses! Everyone will need a coloured t-shirt representative of their house colour – RED for Ruby House, BLUE for Sapphire House, YELLOW for Amber House and GREEN for Emerald House. If you are not sure which house your child is in please check with their teacher.
Don’t forget:
As well as a coloured t-shirt, shorts and suitable outdoor PE footwear are essential. Please make sure your child has sun protection and a water bottle if the weather is good and perhaps a coat if it is not!
Spectators will be very welcome to sit in the designated areas, but remember to keep a safe distance away from the marked track! The public playground will be out of bounds for school children during the day. The Pavilion Coffee Bar will be open from 11.30am to 4.00pm for cakes, coffee and tea – please pop in for a warm welcome (and delicious food!)
Picnic:
For the whole school picnic the children will be taken to meet their parents/friends or will sit with school staff to eat. Children who normally have a packed lunch should bring it into school in the morning as usual. Children who normally have a school meal will be provided with their pre-selected packed lunch. Parents can, of course, bring extra snacks for their children. After eating, all the children will return to the school playground for supervised lunch play followed by registration before the afternoon activities commence. Please note that the picnic will be cancelled if it rains!
Presentation:
Following the presentation of the trophy to the winning house at the end of the afternoon children will return to their classrooms for normal collection.
Rounders Match
After the success of last year’s ‘children v parents Rounders match’, we are inviting Rounders and Cricket club parents to join us at 3pm. The parents won last year – so the children are training hard!
