Dear Parents and Carers

A great day was had by all on Saturday at ‘Chiddfest’ music festival. Rain did nothing to detract from the success of the event nor to deter the whole community from coming together for a fantastic day of music and fun. Well done and thank you to all parents and helpers; in particular our thanks and congratulations go to Mrs Taylor, Mr Cowley, Mrs Quickfall and Mrs Cooke who worked tirelessly to make the day a huge success. Thanks also to Music Works’ volunteers who worked patiently with our children and staff to prepare them for their performances. Finally, well done to children who sang their hearts out and looked brilliant! 

I have now interviewed and appointed a second class teacher for the September Reception Class intake. Mrs Kirsten Bennett is a highly qualified and experienced Reception Class/Key Stage 1 teacher who graduated from Liverpool University and the University of Roehampton as well as the Guildford College of Law. Mrs Bennett has undertaken further training including school leadership and Child Protection training. She is very experienced in delivering both the Early Years and KS1 National Curriculum and has previously taken responsibility for devising tracking and assessment systems. Mrs Bennett enjoys encouraging children to learn through hands-on, practical activities, drama and role play, and she provides challenging and stimulating learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. In her spare time, Mrs Bennett enjoys reading, sport and theatre. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Bennett to St Mary’s in September 2017, when she will work closely with Miss Griffiths to ensure that both Reception Classes enjoy equal, high quality provision.  Children have now been allocated to their classes, following a painstaking process, including input from local Nursery providers.

Year 4 Swimming help please:  If any parents are free on Thursday 15th June we would be very grateful for help with lifts to The Herons for swimming lessons. Please get in touch with the office.

Year 1 Football Festival 18th May

8 boys took part in a Football Festival last week at Farncombe FC. They played 4 matches:  drew 2 and won 2. Goals were scored by Max Moser and Corey Hitchcock.  All boys played exceptionally well, behaved beautifully and demonstrated a good sporting attitude. All boys received a medal and a KitKat! It was a good afternoon of sport!

Well done: Noah Buckley, Max Batten, Zach Chapman, Max Moser, Corey Hitchcock, Joseph Elson Finn Hamlett and Archie Gilmour.

Now that the weather is warming up can we remind you to put sun cream on and provide a hat for your children.


On Monday 22nd May, Year 3 had a Titanic Experience Day.  The children arrived at school in a fabulous selection of passenger costumes ready to set sail on board the Titanic! 

On their arrival, children collected a ticket from the Captain (Miss Howells) to find out what class they would be travelling in. 

After completion of the passenger list, they were joined by a visitor, Anne, from Godalming Museum.  Anne kicked off the day’s learning by giving the children a talk about the ship, and its passengers, before the children became detectives as they explored different passenger suitcases to find out who the luggage might have belonged to, and which class they may have travelled in.  There was also an opportunity to try some of the clothes on, including the cork lifejackets!

After this, Anne talked about the local man, Jack Phillips, who was a radio officer on board the Titanic.  Jack was responsible for sending telegrams, and on the night the Titanic struck an iceberg, he sent the distress signals CQD and SOS, never leaving his post even though the ship was sinking.  Year 3 used Morse code kits to send the signals CQD and SOS, and even had a go at writing their names!

Following this, Year 3 explored the frame around a portrait of Jack Philips that can be seen at Godalming Museum.  The frame depicts a number of symbols to remember Jack’s role in the event - such as the Titanic; the initials JP; 1912; and the ‘M’ symbol for ‘Marconi’ – the company Jack worked for.  The children then designed their own symbols reflecting what they had learnt throughout the morning, and pressed these into their own gold foil work, in much the same way as the metal of the frame would have been crafted.

In the afternoon, the children experienced a Titanic afternoon tea, complete with fancy tablecloths in First Class, and listened to music that would have been played by the band on board.  Tea was followed by dancing, and all agreed that they had had a super day!


Full Time Teaching Assistant at St Mary’s Primary School (September 2017)  

A vacancy has arisen for a full time (8.30am to 3.15pm) teaching assistant in reception class from September 2017.  Anyone interested in applying for the position should contact the school office for a job description and application form.

Half term Madness – 1st June @ 2-4pm.  Finding things to do out of term time can be tough. Pop into the Church room for an afternoon of creativity and games to keep the family busy. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Thy Kingdom Come @ The Cathedral – 4th June @ 4.30 - 6pm. This year the Diocese is holding a Prayer and Food Festival. People from across the region will head to the Cathedral to enjoy food, prayer, music and fun! There will be hot dogs, ice-cream, prayer tents, Psalm Drummers, candy-floss, poets, inflatables and live bands. If you’d like to come with us please get in touch so I can organise the *free* tickets!

Messy Church Chiddingfold – 11th June @ the Village Fete! Join people from across Chiddingfold churches to explore faith through craft, fun, mess & food. We’re looking forward to seeing you all!

Messy Church Summer Party! – 9th July, 4-6pm @ the Rectory Chiddingfold (if wet in the village hall!) Come and join the summer fun of games, bouncy castle and of course a BBQ.

Support your team:

To add to the excitement, the children will be competing for their houses!  Everyone will need a coloured t-shirt representative of their house colour – RED for Ruby House, BLUE for Sapphire House, YELLOW for Amber House and GREEN for Emerald House.  If you are not sure which house your child is in please check with their teacher. 


Don’t forget:

As well as a coloured t-shirt, shorts and suitable outdoor PE footwear are essential. Please make sure your child has sun protection and a water bottle if the weather is good and perhaps a coat if it is not!

Spectators will be very welcome to sit in the designated areas, but remember to keep a safe distance away from the marked track!  The public playground will be out of bounds for school children during the day.  The Pavilion Coffee Bar will be open for teas, coffees and delicious cakes - please pop in for a warm welcome!


For the whole school picnic the children will be taken to meet their parents/friends or will sit with school staff to eat.  Children who normally have a packed lunch should bring it into school in the morning as usual.  Children who normally have a school meal will be provided with their pre-selected packed lunch.  Parents can, of course, bring extra snacks for their children.  After eating, all the children will return to the school playground for supervised lunch play followed by registration before the afternoon activities commence.  Please note that the picnic will be cancelled if it rains!


Following the presentation of the trophy to the winning house at the end of the afternoon children will return to their classrooms for normal collection.

Rounders Match

After the success of last year’s ‘children v parents Rounders match’, we are inviting Rounders and Cricket club parents to join us at 3pm. The parents won last year – so the children are training hard!
