Dear Parents and Carers

Firstly may I say, since the publication of the Ofsted Report earlier this week, I have been absolutely overwhelmed with the response of parents. The many positive comments and words of support we have received have been both heart-warming and humbling. Some of you have also written or spoken to individual teachers to express your gratitude and support for them.  It is impossible to put into words just how much this means to us. You have helped us to regain our faith in humanity and the staff room is slowly regaining its usual happy atmosphere as teachers reclaim their natural good-humour. Thank you!

We are also fortunate that colleagues themselves are an exceptionally cohesive team and have each other’s support. They know that this is not a time for finger-pointing; it’s a time to stand firm and re-assess the school’s position. We do not think the report is a true reflection of our school and we will be holding a meeting to that effect, on Thursday 24 November at 7.00pm, to which you are all invited. We look forward to seeing you there, when you can hear more about the detail of the report and the school’s next steps.

We will continue to pursue our aspiration to become one of the best educational providers in the area. Our development plans will continue to reflect ambitious steps as we progress towards our goals.

Difficult as it is, to turn our attentions to other matters now, I am pleased to report that our children have, yet again, been cause for celebration and a source of great pride to us this week. Last Friday we held a Remembrance Service in school when even the youngest children showed their respect as they listened and reflected throughout the service and managed to stand through the two-minutes’ silence without a murmur; a remarkable feat for 4 and 5 year olds!

This week has been a rather low-key Geography Week, but children learned that it was international map day on Wednesday and they looked at maps of France and Europe in their French lessons.

Y1 visited Woolmer Hill for sporting activities and Mrs Wright has asked me to remind you about the cross country running taking place at Glebelands School this weekend. For more information about this please see Mrs Wright’s item below. Mrs Wright would love to see you there. Let’s hope the weather is kind!

Year 2 visited the Museum of London this week where they were enthralled, engaging in the interactive exhibition activities, and seeing some of the artefacts from the Fire of London, thus reinforcing what they are learning in their topic work this term.

Y4 & 6 children visited Guildford Cathedral to learn about Advent and what it means to wait. They enjoyed writing poems and making wreaths. The organiser was Mrs Potter, a former teacher at the school, who has now moved to the education department at Guildford Cathedral.

KS2 Carol Service at St Mary’s Church will now be on 15th December 2016 at 6.30pm.


A reminder to bring your Christmas Card entries into school no later than next Wednesday, 23rd November, in time for the judges to carefully choose the winner.


CHRISTMAS FAIR – Friday 16th December, from 3.00pm

Our plans for the Christmas Fair 2016 are taking shape. However, we would really welcome extra help from parents or carers who are keen to be a part of the event whether it be lending a hand on a stall or even taking a stall. Please let the Office know if you or a friend might be interested.

To make this year’s Fair extra fun, we would like parents to make a note of the following key dates:

Friday 18th November – Mufti Chocolate/ Bottle Day

In exchange for wearing home clothes, please bring in either something chocolatey for the children’s Chocolate Tombola or a bottle (drink) for the adult Tombola.

Friday 2nd December – Decorated Jolly Jam Jar Mufti Day

Another chance to wear home clothes! This time children can wear what they like if they bring in a jam jar filled with small goodies like sweets, toys, stationery, mini gifts … things that would appeal to both boys and girls. Feel free to decorate the jars to make them look festive!

The PTA would welcome donations for the Christmas Hamper prize. There will be a list inside the Mullard Building from tomorrow, Friday, where you can choose what to bring in. Thanks in advance for your support with donations.


Secret Room

The Secret Room gives your children a chance to buy their grandparents/other special grown-ups or yourselves a gift for Christmas.  The gift is chosen and wrapped, ready to be given to you on Christmas Day!  The cost of each item is £2.  This is a lovely activity for the children; they get very excited and enjoy the hustle and bustle of buying a gift for their grown-ups.  For families with siblings at the school, please use a separate envelope per child and return to school office by Monday 5th December (this helps us make sure grown-ups get the right gift!).

Christmas Trees     

Struggling to decide where to buy your Christmas tree this year?  Well, worry no more for this year the PTA are organising their very own Christmas tree market and you can buy your beautiful 8ft Christmas tree (or smaller!) from us on Saturday 10th December.  All orders must be put in ahead of time (by 30th November) but then you can forget about it until collection day comes around.  Not only are we removing the hassle of travelling far afield to get your tree, and saving you money, we are also giving you a great opportunity to support your school by helping us raise valuable funds. 

 Scooters for schools

We have signed up to a promotion with Micro Scooters whereby every time you purchase something

from their website, 10% of the value of your order will be given to the school.  If you are buying a

new scooter for your child this Christmas, please use this service as we can earn valuable funds for

our school at no extra cost to you!  Please remember to put in the school’s URN number to make the

most of this opportunity - 140026


There will be three performances of the Nativity for KS1. The dates are as follows:

Wednesday 7th December at 9.30am

Wednesday 7th December at 2.00pm

Thursday 8th December at 2.00pm.

School Council has already raised money for the Confederation Charities. Due to the success of the entrepreneurial activity, a donation will be made to Children in Need. On Friday children are invited to dress either in mufti or for Children in Need. This day coincides with our own mufti when children have been asked to bring in either chocolate or bottles for the Christmas Fair; however any additional donation for Children in Need is welcomed.



Year 1 have spent an exciting morning taking part in 3 sporting activities at Woolmer Hill. The children enjoyed practising their football, netball and basketball skills. Miss Harling is very proud of how Year 1 participated in every activity and showed impeccable behaviour. Miss Harling and Mrs Rauch would like to thank Mrs Hitchcock and Mrs Hamlett for helping out!

We have run 366.61 miles so far around the world. We are currently in Saarbrucken in Germany where the Men's Table Tennis World Champions are held. Well done everyone!


Please keep an eye out for an envelope in your child’s book bag on Thursday. Please can you make any changes, sign and return to the School Office by Wednesday 1st December 2016. Even if you don’t have any changes please can you still sign and return.


Shottermill Infant School, one of the Haslemere Confederation of Schools to which St Mary’s belongs, is looking to recruit a Lunchtime Supervisor to their team. The role involves the supervision and support of pupils, during the lunchtime whilst they are eating and at play. The job is Monday - Friday, 12.00-1.10 each day. If you are interested in applying for this role, please contact the school office for a job description and application form. The deadline for applications is 09.00 Monday 28th November and interviews will be held on Wednesday 30th November.

GDPSSA Cross Country Event -Saturday  19th November 2016

Dear All,

This year's Cross Country event will take place on Saturday 19th November 2016 at Glebelands School, Cranleigh.

Please ensure that you have somebody in charge of your children on the day that can complete the forms (given on the day) regarding race positions (see classification).  This person is also in charge of ensuring that the children get to the start of the race at the appropriate time.  Announcements will be made 5 minutes before the start of each race on a loud megaphone.

The approximate timings for each race this year are the same as the last: 
Year 4 girls - 10.00am
Year 4 boys - 10.10am
Year 3 girls - 10.20am
Year 3 boys - 10.30am
Year 5 girls - 10.40am
Year 5 boys - 10.50am
Year 6 girls - 11.00am
Year 6 boys - 11.10am
Followed by prize giving and team trophies. 
The race distances are as follows (approximates only): 
Years 3 & 4 - 700m
Years 5 & 6 - 1300m

I have thought about splitting the Year 3 + 4 and Year 5 + 6 but all this will do is prolong the waiting time for all.  The important change this year is the layout of the course, which enables only athletes and marshals to cross the course.
Classification Process:

Once the children have raced, they will be given a place card, which they must return to their teacher from their school, who will then write down the child's name and position.  Once they have written all of their competitors names and positions, this form must be given to the recorder (at the recorder’s station) to collate.
The first 6 will receive medals in each race.  The first 4 from each school will count towards their team (years 3 & 4 together and years 5 & 6 together) total; therefore do not worry if you do not have 4 children in a single race.  It will be okay as long as you have 4 children in total in years 3 & 4 combined or years 5 & 6 combined.
I have thought a lot about restricting numbers but feel that it should be open to all.  Therefore there are no restrictions on how many children run in each race from each school.
There are also additional trophies for each team (Year 3 & 4 girls, Year 3 & 4 boys, Year 5 & 6 girls and Year 5 & 6 boys) as well as an overall trophy for the winning school.

If you still have a trophy from last year, please let me know as we will need to return it for the event.

Please confirm your attendance by email (or contact me on the numbers given below).  Prior to the event, it would be great if you could give me an approximate number of how many children you are bringing in each year group.  

We are very grateful of offers of help to do jobs such as marshalling and giving out place cards, so if you have staff or CRB checked parents who would be prepared to do this, please let me know. Nicki C from Chandler is the starter and Claire Brown from Park Mead oversees the recording of place tickets and points.  Please let me know if you would like to help in any other way this year or if I’ve missed anything! Help after school on Friday 18th to begin setting out the course would be great but don’t worry if you cannot make it.
There will be access to toilets on the day as in the previous years.


Please ensure that you park outside the school grounds and the Christopher Robin Car Park.  Parking is available in Parsonage Road. Please inform your parents that a number of wardens operate in this area and parking tickets may be issued if they are parked on Yellow lines.


Refreshments will be available on the day at a small price.  As with previous years we will have a small shop running during the event.

First Aid
Please ensure that you bring your own First Aid bags and necessary medication that your children may need.  Please also ensure that the children bring a top or fleece that they can wear when not competing as well as a supply of water.  I will also bring a supply on the day.
In addition, I will be asking St John's Ambulance to attend the event.  The cost for these will be paid for by the GDPSSA.
