NEWS - 10 OCTOBER 2019

Next week’s value is Thankfulness

“Let’s come to him with thanksgiving.  Let’s sing songs to him” Psalm 95:2

Dear parents/carers

This week’s Open Mornings were a huge success; visitors were very impressed with children’s behaviour and in their ability to articulate their understanding and enthusiasm in relation to their learning. Children gave impressive and detailed descriptions of their work, including information about topic work and related trips and activities, such as an archaeological dig, building Greek temples at Legoland and a forthcoming visit from the fire brigade! Thank you to children for being such positive ambassadors for our school and well done to colleagues and Year 6 pupils who supported me in my marketing campaign!

On Monday, we had a visit from a representative of the ‘U-Foundation’ – a charitable organisation that specialises in global education projects. We hope to engage further with the charity to support a school in Zambia. This fits well with our wider curriculum intent to ensure that St Mary’s children have an understanding of the wider world and that they grasp the idea that not everyone has access to the educational resources we are so fortunate to enjoy.

Earlier this week, Reception children participated in an informative presentation from the local NHS medical team. Nurse Sandra showed children how to wash their hands thoroughly to avoid the spread of germs. Everyone had a go at washing their hands and we hope that parents will encourage this at home, to help us to contain any nasty bugs that have a tendency to multiply at this time of year. We have already had a small number of children off with a sickness bug so rigorous handwashing is of particular importance at this time.

Yesterday, Mrs Porter (Year 2 teacher) and Miss Pye (St Mary’s Church Youth and Children’s Worker) attended a ‘Trinitarian’ training event. This is to develop Mrs Porter as a new RE Subject Leader and to support us in further embedding the Christian character and distinctiveness of St Mary’s School. We hope this will also help us to achieve a positive outcome in our SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) inspection, in due course.

In separate training, Mrs Buckley and Miss Griffiths attended a twilight network session in relation to assessment systems and recording of pupil outcomes for tracking purposes. Mrs Oqvist, our School Business Manager didn’t get off lightly, either; with responsibility for health and safety, she had to update her Fire Marshall and fire extinguisher training!

Next Thursday afternoon, we look forward to welcoming Mrs Jane Winterbone, Assistant Director of Education, to St Mary’s School. Mrs Winterbone’s visit will start with a tour of the school and she will be getting to know children and staff, before meeting senior leaders. We look forward to sharing details of the school’s progress to date and to discussing our aspirations for the future. Mrs Winterbone has already identified that ‘a culture of trust, positive relationships and staff empowerment has helped to create an energy that has had a far-reaching positive impact on the school and community, to support and sustain change and create capacity’.

Have a splendid weekend!
