Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

with Miss Hampshire, Mrs Creswell, Mrs Fozard and Mrs Bond

We are really looking forward to an exciting and busy year ahead in Year 6!

During the Autumn term, our topic focus was 'In the Trenches- World War 1.' We learned about life at home and at war during this time, with a particular focus on life in the trenches. As part of our topic and English work, we read the text 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo, as well as learning about refugees today by reading the text, 'The Journey' by Francesca Sanna.  We led the Remembrance Service in school. We also came dressed in WW1 style costumes, where we enjoyed a day of baking WW1 food as well as making our own trenches on the playground!  We finished off this topic with a brilliant trip to the Imperial War Museum in London.

Our topic for the first half of Spring term 2022, was 'Full Steam Ahead- The Victorians' where we focused on how Britain has changed since the Victorian times and the influence of the Victorian era on our lives today. In science, we learned about evolution and inheritance, focusing on the work of Charles Darwin. We found out about Victorian schools and took part in a Victorian school day, dressed as Victorian children! We also really enjoyed reading the text, 'The Nowhere Emporium' by Ross Mackenzie.

In the second half of the Spring term, our focus was on the topic of 'Order! Order!' where we found out all about the role of the UK Parliament and how laws are made. We held our own House of Commons debates in the classroom and set up our own political parties, holding our own elections. We also went on a super exciting trip to the Houses of Parliament in London, where we got to visit the House of Lords and observe a debate in the House of Commons.

We are looking forward to a busy Summer term ahead. Our topic focuses on 'Heart Beaters' (the human body, the heart and the circulation system), where we will be doing lots of practical investigations- including dissecting a pig's heart! We are currently working very hard towards our SATs tests and are then looking forward to performing in the end of year production, as well as going on our residential to Chidham!
