St Mary's School believe that homework is a number of tasks in which a pupil is asked to do on their own or with their parents in order to reinforce curricular objectives and learning outcomes.  

As children progress through the school there will be an increasing extension in the home learning a child is asked to undertake.

Children will bring home a weekly list of spellings to be learnt. The children are then tested on these words and the next week’s words will be planned based on the test result.


Home learning activities will be given out on Wednesdays to be returned on Mondays.

These activities may include:-

  • completing unfinished work
  • consolidation of skills and concepts in English, Maths and Science
  • learning bonds and multiplication tables
  • maths problem-solving tasks
  • number practising and letter formation
  • researching topic work

A home learning timetable is attached to the children's learning journal at the beginning of each academic year.


All children bring home a book to read on a daily basis. The reading attainment of children who receive regular parental help is significantly better than that of children who do not read at home. Reading together at home is therefore one of the most important components of the school’s homework policy at all stages of a child’s education.

The Home–School Reading Record Book/Home-School Link Book provides regular contact between the teacher and parents.

Parents and carers should complete the Reading Record or Home-School Link Book whenever they read with their children.


Years 2-6 use Learning Journals for their homework each week.

Learning Journals are a personalised learning resource for children. In the Learning Journal, your child can reflect on their weekly learning and record their understanding of the learning objective set by the teacher. A Learning Journal is not a record of what your child has done; it is a record of what they have learnt.

Here is an example of how a Year 6 pupil completed their Learning Journal.

As the Learning Journal is personal children can express their understanding any way they choose. Your child can use a range of methods to work in their Learning Journal. Your child may want to include photos, pictures, cut things out, create flaps, stick in fold out sheets, paint, draw, colour, use glitter pens, ICT or other ideas to present their learning. They can complete the Learning Journal however they wish. Please encourage your child to use their imagination in completing tasks. Each week the Learning Journal will be marked so you can see the comments when it next comes home.

Giving children freedom allows them to think creatively and promotes independent learning. This approach has proven to be a great motivator for children, encourages reflection and consolidates their learning.


Parents experiencing difficulties in supporting children’s work at home, for example, in times of family stress, should discuss the problems at an early stage with the classteacher or Headteacher.

Such conversations will, of course, be held in complete confidence.
