NEWS - 17 MAY 2018

Next week’s value is Reverence

“Therefore, since we receive a Kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe” Hebrews 12:28

Dear parents/carers

Year 6 children sat their national tests (SATs) this week. All participants remained calm and demonstrated resilience, when faced with the rigours of the testing programme. Well done to Year 6! We know that you will have done your very best and, regardless of outcomes, we are very proud of you all!

In relation to the SATs tests, we had a surprise visit, on Wednesday morning, from Ms Laura Dobson, a monitoring inspector, whose role was to check on the storage of test materials and the administration of the tests. I am pleased to report that Ms Dobson was satisfied with St Mary’s test paper storage arrangements and that she confirmed the tests were correctly carried out, in keeping with formal test administration guidelines.

Year 1 children and their teachers had a wonderful day out on Wednesday. They visited Southsea and HMS Victory. Children collected shells and other artefacts from the beach and they were very excited to see the amazing boat! The weather could have been better but, all in all, it was an excellent day out, which included lots of fun, laughter and hands-on learning. Teachers reported back on good behaviour throughout the day. Well done, Year 1 and a big thank you to Year 1 teachers and their helpers.

We have been blessed with visits from representatives of the Good Shepherd Trust recently. Following a visit, last week, from the CEO (Mr Billings), we welcomed one of the Finance Directors to Tuesday’s meeting of the governing body and teachers met Mrs Jo Cambra in Wednesday’s staff meeting. Mrs Cambra talked knowledgeably, about the GDPR (Data Protection) legislation and associated requirements. It is likely that you will receive some communication from our administration department, in due course and you will be required to confirm that you have given consent for various things. Please look out for the paperwork and be sure to return it promptly.

On Thursday, school leaders met with the Early Years Leader, Miss Griffiths, for a review of our Early Years’ Action Plan. Children in Reception classes are enjoying their writing and story-telling and we are predicting that they will all have made good progress by the end of the year and that the majority of them will attain a good level of development. Well done, Reception; this bodes well for Year 1 and beyond.

Tomorrow, the school will be celebrating the royal wedding with a mock wedding ceremony conducted by the very Reverend Sarah. I look forward to telling you more about this exciting event in next week’s bulletin. In the meantime, thank you to Reverend Sarah and to pupils who are taking part and to Mrs Buckley and Mrs Balchin for coordinating the event.

Have a lovely weekend!

On the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Inspired through Sport will be visiting St Mary’s alongside 2 GB Athletes on Wednesday 6th June.

The day will start with an assembly led by the athletes where they will share their sporting journey with the children, allowing them to understand the hard work and dedication needed in order to achieve your goals.  After this, each class will complete a fitness circuit and meet and greet with them also learning about healthy living and the importance of the growth mind-set.

Our athletes will be:-

Tom Evans is Great Britain’s number one Ultra Marathon Runner. An ultra-marathon is a race longer than the normal 26.2 mile marathon – the race also involves off road running. He came first in the Costa Rica Ultra Marathon challenge where he achieved a record of competing the demanding 236 KM route in just 21 Hours (most competitors complete the event in 6 days). This May he will head up Team GB in the World Ultra Marathon Championships!

Chris Gregory is one of the UK’s top volley ball players. He made his Commonwealth debut on the Gold Coast in 2018 where the British Team missed on a medal placement by just 2 points! You can watch videos of Chris here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6mTLmnmvcE

The brave participants of the 3 Peaks Challenge have generously funded this day through their sponsorship and we would like to express our thanks to them and to wish them the very best of luck with their own sporting challenge.

Support your team:

To add to the excitement, the children will be competing for their houses!  Everyone will need a coloured t-shirt representative of their house colour – RED for Ruby House, BLUE for Sapphire House, YELLOW for Amber House and GREEN for Emerald House.  If you are not sure which house your child is in please check with their teacher.

Don’t forget:

As well as a coloured t-shirt, shorts and suitable outdoor PE footwear are essential. Please make sure your child has sun protection and a water bottle if the weather is good and perhaps a coat if it is not!

Spectators will be very welcome to sit in the designated areas, but remember to keep a safe distance away from the marked track!  The public playground will be out of bounds for school children during the day.  The Pavilion Coffee Bar will be open from 11.30am to 4.00pm for cakes, coffee and tea – please pop in for a warm welcome (and delicious food!)

Picnic:

For the whole school picnic the children will be taken to meet their parents/friends or will sit with school staff to eat.  Children who normally have a packed lunch should bring it into school in the morning as usual.  Children who normally have a school meal will be provided with their pre-selected packed lunch.  Parents can, of course, bring extra snacks for their children.  After eating, all the children will return to the school playground for supervised lunch play followed by registration before the afternoon activities commence.  Please note that the picnic will be cancelled if it rains!

Presentation:

Following the presentation of the trophy to the winning house at the end of the afternoon children will return to their classrooms for normal collection.

Rounders Match

After the success of last year’s ‘children v parents Rounders match’, we are inviting Rounders and Cricket club parents to join us at 3pm. The parents won last year – so the children are training hard!
