NEWS - 13 OCTOBER 2017

Next week’s value is Thankfulness

Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 106:1

Dear Parents and Carers

The week began with a visit to Butser Ancient Farm, linking with this term’s Year 3 topic work on the Stone Age. Pupils made some rare and interesting discoveries as they carried out an archaeological dig and practised their hand at chalk carvings. Thank you to teachers and parents who helped make the day a success.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we held Open Mornings when prospective parents were invited to look around St Mary’s and hear about what we have to offer, including our extra-curricular clubs, sporting activities, music, entrepreneurial skills, day and residential trips.

On Thursday morning, Year 4 pupils dressed as evacuees, as part of their World War II topic work; they went out of school to the homes of ‘host families’. Thank you to our volunteer host families who set the scene with drinks and biscuits and kept the children busy with their chores!

Tomorrow (Friday) Year 6 pupils are going on a Roman Dig! Our thanks go to Mrs Moser who owns Windmill Farm in Hampshire, where the Liss Archaeological Society has been excavating a substantial Roman site. Mrs Moser very kindly invited our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils to participate. Children made some interesting discoveries on the 200 acre farm. During the afternoon, children had an insight into orienteering and learned some valuable map reading skills.

Remember next week is parents’ evenings for Years 1 to 6. Please sign up on the sheets which are on the windows of the Mullard building if you have not already done so. Reception Class parents will have an opportunity to find out about the progress of young children after half term.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Yours sincerely

Headteacher

NO MATHS BOOSTER FRIDAY 13TH OCTOBER

Please note there will be no maths Booster on Friday 13th October due to the Year 6 trip to Windmill Farm.

£1 COINS

The old round £1 coins will not be legal tender from 16th October, so we won’t be able to accept them in school after that date.  Don’t forget to check your children’s’ piggy banks for any old £1 coins and get them changed!

FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

On Thursday 5th October, boys from Year 5 and 6 played in our annual Autumn Term Sports District Football Tournament at Tillingbourne. Thirteen schools from our local area took part. We played three tense matches, keeping most of the possession and tackling well. We had many attempts at goal but unfortunately were unable to get the ball in the net!

Well done: Gabriel, Sam, Daniel, Adam, Marley, Toby, Joshua, Scott, Elliot  and Matis.

Thanks you to Ms Gaunt and Ms Wildeman for volunteering lifts and cheering!

NO PENS DAY WEDNESDAY

Last Wednesday, children in Years 1-6 took part in the Communication Trust’s national speaking and listening event, No Pens Day.  Children put down their pens and picked up their language as the day focussed on learning through communication and good quality classroom talk.

Many classes took the opportunity to include more drama based activities in their learning, and good quality discussion was promoted in PSCHE lessons.

In a Science lesson, Year 2 children learnt about healthy eating as they planned a healthy menu, discussing and explaining their choices with a friend.

Year 5 played a game of ‘Robots’ to explore different means of communication.  They had to direct their partners to a cone without speaking, and many found it frustrating not being able to write or talk!

The day made us think about how much we use our pens in our daily lessons, and to consider how we can create more opportunities for high quality speaking and listening activities to further develop the children’s learning. Some children commented that they wished we could have a no pens day every week; however there were also some who couldn’t wait to pick their pens back up and get writing again!

ONE POUND CHALLENGE

We have extended the deadline to Friday 13th October for the One Pound Challenge reply slips.  If your child would like to take part in this excellent fundraiser, please make sure you have returned the reply slip by Friday 13th.

Y5 ANCIENT GREECE DAY

Y5 will be having an 'Ancient Greece' dress up day on Thursday 9th November to coincide with our class assembly. Mrs Clark will be sending a letter to parents regarding this shortly.

PARENTALK

Parentalk - The Teenage Years is a 6 week DVD-based parenting course for small groups of parents in a relaxed and informal setting. It gives parents the chance to get together and talk about the realities of bringing up their older children (emerging teens), share experiences and talk about the practical things that work well and those that don’t! The content is well researched, engaging and based on what is known to be effective in building strong relationships within families, whatever shape or size. It comes fully recommended and is a useful tool at this stage of children’s development before they embark on secondary school.

The sessions will run as follows:
Thursday 2nd November Understanding your teenager
Thursday 9th November Staying connected
Thursday 16th November Identity
Thursday 23rd November Communication and conflict
Thursday 30th November Big pressures…good choices
Thursday 7th December Letting go

For more of a taster, you may wish to check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=237&v=uWwpBO5vlzY
There are approx 10 places on this course, there is no charge and it will run on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the Church Room, St Marys. If you would like to book your place or find out more please don’t hesitate to contact me, Jo McCarthy-Holland or Hannah Pye on hanbpye@gmail.com.

UNAUTHORISED ABSENCE

Just to remind parents that pupils are expected to attend school 100% of the time unless an absence has been authorised by the Head teacher (or delegated member of staff).

If there is an unauthorised leave of absence for 5 or more school days, each parent/carer will be liable to receive a penalty notice. Penalty notices are issued per parent/carer per child and the amount payable is £60.00 if paid within 21 days, rising to £120.00 if paid after 21 days but before 28 days. If the penalty notice remains unpaid after 28 days, the Local Authority must consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court.

ST MARYS SCHOOL UNFORM

It has been bought to our attention that there have been a number of frustrations regarding our school uniform provider Your School Uniform.  We have been liaising with them closely regarding delivery times and sizes and I hope that in future delivery times will be greatly improved.  Arrangements have been made for a sample of every size school jumper to be held by the school in order for you to determine which will be best suited. If you have any concerns or problems please inform our School Business Manager on bursar@stmarys-godalming.surrey.sch.uk or at the school office in order for us to monitor their service.

REFUGEE APPEAL

A big thank you to everyone who supported the Samara’s Aid Appeal for refugees in Syria. We filled 34 boxes and several laundry bags with lovely items people had donated. Thanks also to those who came to help sort clothes, polish shoes and pack boxes. This was our 5th and final collection for Samara’s Aid, thanks to everyone from the school community who has supported us since we began these collections in January 2015.

BIZSCHOOL SPONSPORSHIP

St Mary’s will again this year be working with BizSchool for Years 5 & 6.  In order for us to undertake the programme we require a corporate sponsor – please see the letter attached.  If you own or work for a local business this could be a really good opportunity to engage with a local community project.  There are a number of benefits to the company listed in the letter.  If you think you are able to help please contact Yvette Oqvist our School Business Manager as soon as possible.

CLASS CHRISTMAS CARDS

Please return your Christmas card orders together with cheques made out to St Marys School Chiddingfold PTA by this Friday 13th October.

WEAR IT PINK

We are supporting Wear it Pink day for breast cancer on Friday 20th October.  Children can come dressed in pink and donate £1 for Breast Cancer awareness.

NO NETBALL CLUB

Please note there will be no netball club on 7th November as Mrs Wright will be at a football tournament with Y3 and Y4 boys.
