Victorian Day
On the 20th October 2009, Yr 6 travelled to Guildford to find out what it would have been like to go to school in Victorian times.

We met Emily, the school maid, who showed us into the schoolroom. We were shown to our desks by Miss Smith, who was our teacher for the day. After having the rules explained to us, we sang our hymn and said the school prayer.

In geography, we learnt about peninsulas, ithmasses, islands and continents. We used our spellings to create sentences in English, before reciting poems which we had learnt off by heart.
Next we went downstairs, to have a look at some Victorian-style toys and to have a go with some of them. We returned upstairs for our object lesson, where we drew and described a stuffed owl. We did some mental arithmetic involving Victorian money; such as shillings, three penny pieces, tuppence, pennies and farthings.

While the girls went downstairs to learn about sewing and how to do cross stitch, the boys had a technical drawing lesson. Next, we were taught copperplate writing in copybooks with dip-pens. Lunch was after this, followed by a visit to Guildford castle.
We went to the museum to learn about what life would have been like in the Victorian era.

Also, we completed a quiz about some of the exhibits; before returning to Chiddingfold. (Fortunately we did not have to use Victorian transport!)
